Anti-Aging Medication May Help Dogs Live Longer

Originally Published on ABC News by Katie Kindelan and Dr. Khushali Jhaveri

A San Francisco-based company called Loyal is developing a medication, currently known as LOY-001, aimed at extending the lifespan of large adult dogs. The drug works by interacting with insulin growth factor-1 (IGF-1), a hormone associated with both growth and aging in dogs. Administered as a long-acting inject-able medication by veterinarians every three to six months, LOY-001 has shown mild and temporary gastrointestinal distress as a potential side effect in preliminary studies. Despite positive signals from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), full approval is pending completion of a large clinical trial, along with safety and manufacturing data review, with conditional FDA approval targeted for 2026.
